My mom, an instructor at RDC, says: "ANYONE with a Masters in English is invited to apply to the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences at Red Deer College. We have had some sudden changes in personnel and need to hire now for the fall. Thanks."

Apparently they suddenly have 17 classes without instructors! Eep!

Pride recap

Twice recently I've drank ridiculously huge amounts of water, once because I exercised really a lot, and once because I was out in 30 degree heat all day. Both times, I felt exactly the same effects:

- My tummy felt good all day.
- I didn't really get very hungry all day.
- And then BANG! In the evening I got really really really hungry and had like three meals in a row.

Calorie-wise, I don't really think that's better than my usual routine.

Anyway, Pride was good! I really liked being in the parade and having people cheer in my general direction. Every now and then people from the crowd would say "I love CJSR!" or something to that effect. In our group, if I remember correctly, there were four Gaywire hosts, three friends, and two listeners (who were SUPER STOKED to be marching with us!)

At the booth, we had lots of help from other CJSR people. They brought all the supplies, set up, and manned the table until 4:30, and us Gaywire people only had to be there from 4:30 until 7:30. We made a little money for the station and chatted with people who came by, and then we put everything away and Amanda drove it all back to the station.

The only bad bit was when I first arrived and no one else was there for 25 minutes. I was getting REALLY nervous! I was sitting by myself in an empty booth with nothing on the table, thinking "I have to get to the start of the parade! Eek!" I was totally bad with names yesterday, but I think it was Alanna who arrived just in the nick of time, gave me a banner and stickers, and told me to go to the parade while she set everything up. Yay!

After it was all over, Graham and I went home, ate food, sat in the hot tub for a while (I was really achey!), and watched the Tim Burton Batman movie. It was better than I remembered, and I actually picked up on plot points I never have before! Like that the mob boss set up the Joker to be caught because the Joker was having an affair with the mob boss' girlfriend. I mean I think I always realized later on what was going on, but this time I got it from the beginning.

I feel groggy. Too much sleep I think. On the agenda for today: brunch, groceries, enjoy the weather, and go to the ENTS open house. (Edmonton New Technology Society - http://ents.ca/) Yay!

Happy Pride!

Sorry I fail so much at posting lately. I just wanted to say that I'm marching in the Pride Parade today! Yay!

I got up and went to the farmer's market for FREE pancakes, sausages, and juice, which was a fantastic way to start the day, and bought some eggs and things like that. Also got talked into buying a $5 membership for the downtown community league, because they tell you about when events are coming up, and you can influence change in the downtown area apparently. There are also coupons.

I'm going to make a snack and then help set up the booth for Gaywire on CJSR. Then I'm in the parade, and then I'm manning the booth all afternoon, during the festival. Sit back, sell some shirts, chat with listeners, listen to the main stage... Should be fun times!

Happy Pride everyone!

I had a really grouchy, yucky day. I blame hormones. And there was no one at work! There have been a few layoffs, someone was on vacation, someone had an appointment, the boss was out of town, two people went to a conference... There were three people on the whole floor for most of the afternoon, and I was the only one in the room I work in. It didn't help my mood, or my focus.

But I cheered up in time to do Gaywire, where we had a very silly discussion about gay Star Trek fanfiction. You can listen to it here: http://www.cjsr.ualberta.ca/news/news.php?s=gaywire Bastet says I giggled way too much, and I'm honestly not surprised. ;P

I've been posting so rarely lately that I haven't told you yet how obsessed with Star Trek TOS I am right now. I haven't been this obsessed with a show since Buffy. I never in my life thought I would like the Original Series; I assumed it would be slow-paced and lame. But it turns out to be super awesome. I'm watching as much as I can get my hands on (read: as much as Graham can download) and making up dumb stories about it in my head.

I recently bought the PC game Portal and it's really fun, but I haven't put enough time into it to finish it yet. (I'm aware that you can finish it in like 5 hours. Apparently that's how little I'm playing video games right now.) There should be more first person puzzle comedies in the world.

I took out my labret piercing on the weekend. I noticed it had gone off centre, so every time I saw it it drove me crazy. Plus it's easier to brush my front teeth now. It was a little bizarre that it leaked every time I ate for the next two days. heh. Here's a photo.

We got a new freezer on the weekend because the one attached to our fridge died. The new one is a smallish chest freezer, but still bigger than the old one. We could save money by getting meat in bulk. Sweet!

Feeling very tired. Bye for now!

OMG it's so nice out today! :D

Graham and I went for a looooong walk mainly through the river valley, and part of it involved climbing up STEEP dirt hills. I climbed one barefoot, on all fours, and OH MAN IT WAS AWESOME. My hands got all dirty and my legs got all sore, and it was like being a kid again. :D

Our goal was to go to Fast Trax and buy those crazy Fivefinger shoes that are supposed to be very tactile and natural-feeling, but they didn't have the right sizes in very good colours, so we're waiting for another shipment to come in.

Then we came home and relaxed on the balcony.

Last night we saw Wolverine and it was pretty enjoyable as long as you don't think about it very hard. We also saw the latest Dollhouse which was fantastic. I'm really liking that show. I know it's ending, but it sounds like it actually has an ending, so that's ok. Alan Tudyk was really funny too. :)

Last night we also hung out with Nathan for a while to wish him happy birthday, and that was fun. And today I fixed up the lyrics part of my web site, as it was pretty broken before, and that turned out great in no time flat.

This is shaping up to be an amazing weekend. :)

Maybe I'll write a song that goes "Life is sweet / when you have bare feet..." Or bear feet, but that would be a totally different song.

My New Orleans trip!

  • Apr. 26th, 2009 at 12:49 PM
Glee!
I'm finally getting around to telling you about my holiday!

Main reasons it was awesome:
- It was nice and hot! I got a sunburn! I wore sandals and a skirt!
- There's something for everyone: architecture, wildlife, art, music, food, sunny weather, drinking and debauchery...
- I didn't think about work or volunteering or any other obligations for 6 days. It was amazing.

You can see my Facebook photo album here. Please tell me if the link works.

My vacation has officially started! I'm about to get in the car to go to the Calgary airport!

Free wifi at both calgary and salt lake airports = utter fail. Don't require email conf then block email.

My mom's presentation went brilliantly. Very positive reaction and much discussion. And I got to show the Perry and Sobule videos I'd found.

I have so many fun things to tell you about!

Wednesday was DemoCamp, where Graham presented the web site he's working on. (He did really good too!) It's called BittaBlog, and the idea is that you can write a little bitta to remind you of the bigger blog post you want to make later. It's useful for anyone who's ever said "Remind to post about ____________ when I'm more awake/when I have more time." It doesn't have all the features yet that it's going to have later, like being able to easily move your posts to your actual livejournal or wordpress or other blog, but you can test out making bittas and blogs and stuff. And it got a great response from the audience!

Anyway, DemoCamp was a lot of fun. There were five presenters, all with good ideas (though some were better speakers than others). People were writing reactions on Twitter the whole time, using the tag #democampyeg, and that tag briefly got up to the seventh most popular tag on all of Twitter that night. It was pretty cool. And afterward there was kareoke and nachos at RATT.

On Friday I was given a brand new computer at work! Which is awesome, and has tons of space and is faster, but I always forget how much time it takes to get a new computer set up to my liking: Photoshop, bookmarks, quick launch shortcuts, etc. And every time I start a new task, I realize there's something else I need: fonts, Winrar, the IE tab add-on... But once it's completely set up, it'll be RAD!

Yesterday was Pi Day! I went to get a McDonald's pie like last year, but they were sold out, so I got an A&W turnover instead, which is the same thing. Happy belated Pi Day!

My friend Carl has a new internet TV show called Annex'd, which already has two episodes. It's about him and his roommate, living in the Annex in Toronto, being nerdy and odd - one is an extrovert and the other is a shut in - and they have adventures. So far there's one about being stalked by Summer Fun Cthulhu, and one about the power going out and having no microwave!

Anyway, I'm writing the theme song! It'll be rad! I've already sent a sample song to Carl to see what he thinks. I love funny nerdy songs! :D

Yesterday I spent some time getting my Twitter feed to show up on mustbetuesday.com. It was hard because it's been so long since I've done anything CSS related, but I installed the Firebug add-on and Graham helped, and in the end I prevailed! Without any tears!

Friday was movie night at the Nexopia office. We watched Bolt, which was so fun! I wasn't expecting it to be such a good movie. Bolt the dog was adorable, trying to figure out why his super powers weren't working, Mittens the cat was the smartest character in the show (but I don't believe for a second that cats have dog envy), and Rhino the hamster was such a giggling fanboy, hilarious. I think everyone else was expecting to MST3K the movie, but by halfway through, it seemed like everyone was really engrossed in the story. Heh.

Ok, I'm going to try to post more often, so my posts are shorter. heh. See you!

The radio show I was going to be on tonight has been rescheduled! There are flood warnings and the host can't get to the station... So tune in next week instead and wish Ohio good luck!

Edit in case that doesn't make sense: It was to be a phone interview with a station in Ohio. :)

I went to the songwriters' circle on Monday, and it was a lot of fun! It was just what I needed after a crazy stressful day at work. (Mondays are getting more and more like that lately.) My new song made people laugh a lot, and there was lots of joking around (unrelated to the song).

Yesterday was board game night! Board game night is awesome, but RISK involves too much waiting, for my taste. I think I know what I would do differently next time. First of all, no one told me going after Asia is stupid and hard. Also, NEVER TAKE ADVICE FROM NATHAN. EVER. He's the bluffingest bluff-master ever, and he's not looking out for your best interests. ;P

I've been sleeping really badly lately, and yesterday I completely zoned out at work, like, constantly. I ended up leaving early because it was either that or waste more time. Last night though, I forced myself to lie still in one position and not roll over, and that cured the tossing and turning and I slept way better. It seems so obvious now.

On Friday I was SUPER-STOKED that I bought Facebook ads for my company's Facebook application, and people were clicking and buying more than usual! I was dancing around and telling everyone... But I didn't have access to see what was bought. Monday I found out it was mostly free bonus items. Very disappointing. But at least the ads are working and more people are adding the app.

Today Jeremey at work bought me cookies! :D

I got asked to do an interview about my music this Sunday on a radio show in Ohio. WBGU FM. Neat! The show is Sex Talk Live and the episode is about polyamory, so they're playing My Boyfriend's Girlfriend.

I totally reminded myself what I've been up to lately by reading back through my Twitter archive. I love Twitter.

Ok, I have to make a plan for supper. I'm hungry! Bye for now!

New Song OMG! - Grocery Shopping Alone

I finally - FINALLY - sat down and recorded a new song for you. Chances are, either you've noticed the lack of mailing list updates over the last few months and thought "Hm, maybe she got a REAL job," or you're now scratching your head going "Why am I on this person's mailing list again?"

Well, it's true, I do have a real job. I'm getting used to working full time, and finally said to myself "If I don't MAKE time for music, the time isn't going to magically appear," and I really enjoyed the process a lot, so I'm hoping to write and record more and more over the next while - in little bursts at a time.

The new song is about being domestic and organized, having a routine, getting the groceries, and loving it! This is called Grocery Shopping Alone.

You might remember I entered the Dr Horrible contest last year, with the Cutinator song. Well I finally got a copy of the DVD, and saw my song title in the "dishonorable mentions" list! LOL! I'm so pleased that I got a little mention, even though I didn't win. Check it out! http://twitpic.com/1nr8z

Here's the video I entered in the contest, in case you missed it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ATxiOoVV6Jc

A) People who have been tagged must write their answers on their blog and replace any question that they dislike with a new, original question.

B) Tag eight people.

Ali, Beth, Saibakato, windwoodrose, swmbo, devon, zatsuyo, bambamiamtam

1. Make a list of 5 things you can see without getting up:
Three stuffed animals that come with online games (a puppy and a hedgehog from Webkins, and a puppy from TY.com), a flashlight, a block calendar (you flip the blocks to set the right date; it's now on Jan 28), two white boards, and a package of floss-toothpick things.

Prism show tomorrow!

This morning I got a message from spoken word performer TL Cowan asking me if I'd like to perform at Prism tomorrow night. Eep! I said yes, because I'm crazy, and because I only get a 15 minute set, so it can't be THAT hard to get ready, right?

The event is a book release party by Chandra Mayor, and there are also performances by TL Cowan and drag/performance artist Teen Jesus Barbie. I'm right at the beginning, at 8pm.

It's flattering that she thought of me when she needed someone fun to set the tone for the evening. She remembered me from the Loud & Queer Cabaret. Go me!

Here's the info:

Start Time: Friday, February 6, 2009 at 7:30pm
End Time: Saturday, February 7, 2009 at 2:00am
Location: Prism
Street: 10521 101 Street NW

Manicure!

Sometimes I think I've gotten girly because I wear skirts and heels, but no, it turns out I still utterly fail at girly. :P

My mom and I went and got manicures today, which was fun (and comes with a hand massage!) but I should not have gotten polish. It's not going to last two days. I've already messed up two of my nails. That's one fifth!

Leaving the spa place was hilarious. My mom helped me put my boots on, but she was trying to be all dainty so as not to mess up HER nails, and I just cracked up. It was awesome.

My nails are purple to go with my hair. :D

Oops, that's a third nail...
